Performing arts are art forms in which artists use their voices and/or the movements of their bodies, often in relation to other objects, to convey artistic expression. The performing arts are forms of art in which individual people perform separately or together. Performing arts include a variety of disciplines but all are intended to be performed in front of a live audience.

Performers - Artists who participate in performing arts in front of an audience are called performers, such as actors, dancers, musicians, singers etc. Performing arts are also supported by people in related fields, such as songwriting, choreography and stagecraft.

Types of Performing Art - This may include dance, music, ballet, opera, theatre, musical theatre, spoken word, mime and others.

  • Theatre - Theatre is all about acting out stories in front of an audience, using gestures, speech, music, dance, sound and spectacle. Theatre takes forms such as plays, musicals, opera, improvisational theatre, pantomime, mime and others.
  • Dance - Dance is also used to describe methods of non-verbal communication. In the context of performing arts, dance generally refers to human movement, typically rhythmic and to music, used as a form of audience entertainment in a performance setting. Definitions of what constitutes dance are dependent on social, cultural, aesthetic, artistic and moral constraints. Choreography is the art of making dances, and the person who does this is called a choreographer.
  • Music - In performing arts this may include instruments as in bands and groups of players, and vocal renditions by one or more participant. Plays and stories may also be presented using music and will then often be called a Musical. Music is also of course used to perform choreographed dance to. Music focuses on three career paths, music performance, music education, and musicology (theory, history, etc.). Students learn to play musical instrument, but also study music theory, musicology, history of music and musical composition.
